The other three Cardinal Heroes are weak in comparison to the rising hero. First, the Cardinal Heroes lack the power and authority to make decisions on their own. They are instead reliant on others to make decisions for them. Second, they are not well-equipped to lead large armies or fight in wars. Finally, they are not well-known or well-loved by the people. These factors make them less likely to be able to inspire and motivate others to follow in their footsteps.

Although the Church of the Three Heroes and the Melromarc crown gave the Spear Hero Motoyasu and the Bow Hero Itsuki enthusiastic support, it didn’t matter much. Itsuki, Motoyasu, and Ren are still struggling to fulfill their roles as heroes. Naofumi has been helping them out time and again. There are several reasons that these three are falling behind.

The Three Heroes were never tested as rigorously as Naofumi was.

While some isekai heroes may be overpowered, like the skeletal Ainz Ooal Gaown or Rimuru Tempest, the slime, many other heroes of the isekai are just starting out and must work hard to build their lives and achieve success. It is a test of character to be an isekai hero. Natsuki Subaru uses his intellect to change the course of history. Iwatani Naofumi was a defense-only Cardinal Hero and received no support from either the Melromarc crown nor the Church. Naofumi thrived, and grew quickly from the challenge. However, that was not the case for the other Cardinal Heroes.

Ren, Itsuki, and Motoyasu all benefited from the support. For example, Princess Malty joined Motoyasu’s party, and Rishia Ivyred joined Itsuki’s team. These heroes quickly became sloppy and soft due to their fame and success. These three heroes had great offensive power but were never pushed to learn and adapt. They were too comfortable, both mentally and physically.

They were thus woefully unprepared to face the later Waves against foes like Glass and L’Arc Berg. So Naofumi was appointed as a battle-hardened Cardinal Hero with a lot to prove his worth. If Naofumi hadn’t been labeled a criminal and then ostracized, it is possible that he would have ended up just like the three other Cardinal Heroes. It didn’t, fortunately for the story.

The Heroes acted like video game characters

Motoyasu and Itsuki treated the isekai adventure like a videogame in every way. While the new world did indeed have game mechanics like health bars, XP, and leveling up to help you, the heroes didn’t really grasp the context in which they were placed. They viewed themselves more as RPG characters that needed to defeat their enemies and earn XP in order to succeed, all within the framework of a fun, streamlined system. The kingdom of Melromarc is not a Final Fantasytitle and things don’t always go as smoothly and positively in real life. This is a real world, and there are real consequences for your actions. There is no plot armor like in video games.

The heroes often chose the easiest option to fulfill their quests, only for it to lead to more problems later. For example, killing a dragon and having its rotting corpse spread disease throughout the entire town. Naofumi, on the other hand, saw this adventure as a reality and knew that all actions had consequences. Although this isekai adventure has RPG elements, it is still more real than not. The real world isn’t as streamlined or fun-oriented as a AAA-title videogame. The heroes thought they could just level up and learn new combat techniques to win.

However, a real RPG would reward players for choosing this route. The Four Cardinal Heroes need to fully engage themselves in the nuanced, living world, act intuitively, and forget about the conveniences of playing a RPG. Itsuki, Motoyasu and Ren failed to do so, leaving a gap between the two. To defeat Glass, dragons, and the manipulative Kyo Ethnina it takes more than just critical hits. Itsuki, Ren, and Motoyasu have not grasped this since Shield HeroSeason 2. This allowed Kyo to subdue them easily. No doubt, the heroes will continue to struggle until they learn and practice the same lessons as Naofumi.

The Rising of the Shield Hero, an isekai anime series, is back for another season of fantasy fun. While the new season of Shield Hero features many new characters and even a new world that Naofumi and her party can explore, not all has changed. The other three Cardinal Heroes, for example, are still struggling despite their fame.
