Tsume Inuzuka is a Japanese journalist and author who has written extensively on the Japan-China relationship. She has been a senior correspondent for the Japan Times since 2003, and has also worked as an editor at the Asahi Shimbun and the Mainichi Shimbun. In her latest book, “The China Syndrome: How Japan is Suffering from Its Own Version of the ‘China Threat’” (published by Yale University Press in 2018), she argues that Beijing’s growing economic power and military might are causing Tokyo to become increasingly reliant on Beijing for both security and economic support. Inuzuka’s book is based on her extensive research into China-Japan relations, which she conducted over a period of several years while working as an expert for the Japan Times. Her work has been widely respected within Japanese media circles, and she has been awarded numerous awards including the prestigious Yomiuri Prize for Journalism in 2018. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1965, Inuzuka grew up in a family that was deeply involved in politics and culture. Her father was a member of the Hiroshima City Council and her mother was a well-known artist. She began studying journalism at Kyoto University before moving to Tokyo to work as an editor at various newspapers before joining the Japan Times in 2003. She currently works as an expert on China-Japan relations for the paper.
