Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie Manga Compared to the anime
The story of the Shikimori anime series is based upon the Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie manga created by Keigo Maki. The manga has been serialized in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket online webzine from February 2019, and is now up to Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie Volume 13 (May 9, 2022). Shikimori Volume 13 contains Chapters 123 and higher.
The official Shikimori’s not just a Cutie manga English translation was published by North American publisher Kodansha USA in October 2020. The English Shikimori manga was at Volume 9 as of April 5, 2022. Volume 10 is presumably due to be released later in 2022.
The Shikimori’s not just a Cutie manga was a frank and witty story that skipped past content while tying it all with original anime content. Similar to other Rom-com manga series the chapters were adapted out in order. The story was then expanded upon greatly to create a cohesive story based on the anime’s episodic format.
The manga volumes that came later had shorter stories than the manga chapters before them. These were mainly focused on Shikimori x Izumi. Later manga volumes developed short stories arcs such as the sports festival arc or the Kyoto school field trip (yet again, another Rom-com trope). The anime adapts the chapters in these cases in a sequential order. However, later episodes pull scenes from earlier Izumi-x Shikimori chapters to illustrate them, rather than reinterpreting the manga’s timeline.
These changes may have made the anime version more appealing than the manga. The studio would have made the episodes more repetitive if they had used panel-by-panel adaption. Additionally, certain characters would not have been introduced until the end of the season.
Shikimori Episode 1 was the most significant change, as Izumi’s parents weren’t introduced until Chapter 16. It was the Chapter 1 story that Shikimori saved Izumi, who was originally introduced by Izumi in Chapter 16.
Kamiya, a volleyball player, was not first introduced until Chapter 39. She became a romantic rival during both the Cultural Festival Arc (and the Sports Festival Arc). Shikimori Episode 2 introduced her early, and was anime-only.
Shikimori Episode 3 actually removed some content. Chapter 17 featured everyone celebrating Izumi’s birthday. However, the anime changed the scene and made it a regular meal. Shikimori kissed Izumi’s forehead at the end of the day and said, “I love… good night.”
Shikimori Episode 4 expanded on a story about Izumi, Shikimori and their date to visit the planetarium. Bonus (omake) chapters were used to extract Nekozaki’s background and Shikimori’s cooking class. Shikimori Episode 5 also featured scenes from Chapters 15, 64, and 65 to complete the episode.
Shikimori Episode 5 also had a slight change that better reflected Izumi’s character. Manga Volume 3 shows Izumi trying to save a little girl by himself on the river. But when his foot cramps, Shikimori must rescue them both. Izumi saved the child from a leg cramp in the anime.

Nothing can stop the Izumi x Shikimori love fest. They exchange Christmas gifts and see Christmas lights together. Shikimori even watched a movie at Shikimori’s house with her mother. Izumi’s mother, Shikimori’s mom even met during a shopping trip.
Izumi loses his kite while the gang is flying them. However, Rika Isana recovers it. Shuu Inuzuka’s part-time senpai. Isana hopes to open her own coffee shop one day.
The third semester will begin with a school visit to Kyoto. The Kyoto trip will see the class split into groups, and Izumi becomes the group leader. They need an extra boy to co-ed their group so Izumi picks the shy Saruogi as her partner.
Shikimori hopes to create a special moment with Izumi during the Kyoto trip. He also wants to create a special memory… but that’s only for them.
