Dawn of the Witch’s debut season received mixed reviews from critics. It scored significantly lower than its prequel Grimoire of Zero which was rated mediocre.

While The Mahoutsukai Reimeiki is not a standalone story it’s still a good fantasy romp. This does not explain the story’s context, and only gives flashbacks to current plot points.

Even worse, Grimoire of Zero only adapts the first volume of an 11-volume book series. The anime’s overall storyline jumps from the first storyarc to the second and then skips over to the newer The Dawn of the Witch series. Since flashbacks are so restricted, viewers who are not familiar with the world are left in a quandary.
