Motoyasu Kitamura is a Japanese journalist and author who has written extensively on Japan’s political and social landscape. He has also been a regular columnist for the Japan Times, and has been involved in various media projects, including the creation of the Japan Media Project at New York University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Kitamura is also a visiting professor at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Appearance

Motoyasu’s long, blond hair is pulled back in a ponytail and his bangs hang on the left side. He has bright orange eyes and bright brown skin.

He prefers a sleeveless tunic to his dark clothes. He also wears leather gloves and leather boots.

He used to wear chainmail under his sleeveless tunic, and silver armor on different parts of his body in the past. However, he later discarded them when he learned the true nature Malty S Melromarc (Motoyasu’s ex-companion).

He possesses the Legendary Spear, which he received when he was summoned from another world.

Personality

Motoyasu is most likely the friendliest Legendary Hero. He is loyal to his friends, it has been said. He is extremely naive, and easily fooled. He’s generally a pleasant person, but he can be easily fooled when it comes to women. He will believe whatever a woman tells him, even if there is no evidence. Malty S Melromarc accused Naofumi of rape. Even though she had taken his clothes and money (both of which she gave Motoyasu), the man believed her and became hostile towards Naofumi to defend her. He completely ignored that a real victim of rape would run away and not take her belongings.

He is a flirt, a skirt chaser and asks Raphtalia to leave Naofumi to join his party. However, he quickly admits that Raphtalia was correct to criticize him for flirting while they were having a party exchange. He is unable to believe that any woman can do wrong, be evil, heartless or manipulative. Later, he acts alone to rescue Raphtalia & Filo from Naofumi’s slavery. Raphtalia quickly points out the flaws in his actions.

He displays high levels of self-delusion, willful ignorance, and even idiocy. He listens only to what he likes and ignores anything that might upset him. This is evident in his fight with Naofumi to free Raphtalia. He received a slap rather than a hug after he liberated her from slavery. When he was called out for hypocrisy, his desperate defense consisted of claiming that Naofumi had brainwashed him. Even after all the evidence, he refused to believe Malty had framed Naofumi. He believed in Malty, and denied all the facts. Motoyasu began to doubt her words after Malty was exposed as a pathological liar and had a temporary slave-crest that zapped her at every lie.

He won’t take on a fight if he doesn’t believe he will win. This is evident twice more by his cocky challenges of Naofumi.

After unlocking his Curse Series, his personality changes completely. He develops an obsession for Filo and starts to regard Naofumi as his father-in-law. He also becomes a Filolial lover and a skirt-chasing shopper. He can no longer see women as other than pigs, and finds their “reek” disgusting. He enjoys spending time with filolials. His psyche becomes so distorted that he is unable to see women as anything other than pigs. He develops a fearless, bloodthirsty style for battle without any concern about being killed or covered in blood.

Background

Motoyasu was an undergraduate student at the University of Tokyo. He was having too many relationships with girls and, before he knew what, the situation turned violent. He was then stabbed to death. Due to this trauma, he developed fear of violence in women (yandere’s).

Later, the Spin-off Series revealed the full story. It wasn’t that Motoyasu was dating too many girls, but he couldn’t decide between two of them.

Motoyasu was friends with two women: a quiet, shy girl named Momiji and an assertive girl named Ikuyo. Both of them had feelings for Motoyasu and eventually confessed their love to him. Ikuyo demanded Motoyasu pick one, but the latter decided to flee the scene and end the discussion. Ikuyo lost patience and let her temper get the best of her. She grabbed a knife out of the kitchen and pointed it at Momiji. Motoyasu was shocked by Ikuyo’s sudden violence and ran to Momiji to protect her. She ended up being stabbed in the chest by Momiji who also had a knife.

Momiji, normally shy and quiet, began to display yandere-like characteristics, and she stabbed Motoyasu. This was because she was afraid that he was visiting other girls than herself and Ikuyo. She was enamored with the idea of joining Motoyasu in death and sharing the afterlife with him. In a jealous fit, Ikuyo also stabbed Motoyasu, declaring that if anyone was going with him in the afterlife it would be her. Momiji and Ikuyo repeatedly stabbed Motoyasu, possibly causing him to die from blood loss.

Later, he was summoned to another universe where he found himself reminded of the game he had played in Emerald Online.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero: Motoyasu Katamura’s Powers Explained

You can see that Motoyasu Kitamura thinks that the fantasy realm will be more of a fulfillment of his wish than it is when he is summoned first to it in “The Rising of the Shield Hero.” This idea is not unique. Naofumi, the series’ protagonist and summoned hero of the series, initially believes that it will be more fun to play the hero. Naofumi is raped by Princess Malty S. Malromarc, their friend. Motoyasu, however, buys into the false accusations of Princess Malty S. Melromarc, and so he can enjoy the good life a little longer. However, he discovers that Malty had been manipulating him throughout, and reveals the brutal truth of his seemingly happy fantasy.

Motoyasu isn’t a hero despite all of this. He is easy to manipulate, especially when it comes to women, and he doesn’t always change his mind. To convince Malty that he is a liar, it takes more than a long-fought battle against Naofumi. Motoyasu has some great qualities, despite all this. He’s the Legendary Spear’s choice, and he’s quite skilled in combat. He is able to use his gullibility about women in situations that don’t require him to be. We must look at Motoyasu’s powers to understand why he is such a great hero.

The Legendary Spear lives up to its name.

Motoyasu, the Legendary Spear Hero is quite proficient with spears in general. Because of his Legendary Weapon, he can’t use other weapons than spears. Motoyasu’s ability to wield spears is not enough. Motoyasu’s power can be attributed to his Legendary Spear, which, as all Legendary Weapons does, can replicate the abilities of other weapons. Motoyasu can choose from a variety of spear abilities, making him a Swiss Army knife.

The most common spear abilities that you will see from the Motoyasu’s hotheaded Motoyasu include Chaos Spear (via Shield Hero Wiki) and Air Strike Javelin. The first of these breaks the spear’s end into multiple points that all attack a target simultaneously. Air Strike Javelin, which Motoyasu can summon to use in long-range combat, allows him to summon a throwing weapon. Motoyasu has many other abilities. Some of the most unique include Windmill, which can create tornadoes and Portal Spear which allows Motoyasu and others to teleport to a specific location.

Motoyasu has also powerful magic

To be a good hero in “The Rising of the Shield Hero,” it takes more than just a few tricks and fancy spear handling. Motoyasu, like all adventurers, has a good sense of magic and knows how to use it. Motoyasu is a natural attuned to fire magic and knows how to use it. He also has mastered certain healing spells.

Liberation Fireheal is the most powerful of these healing spells. It heals quite a bit. Motoyasu also has a spell that restores his magic power and his health. This spell is called Liberation Absorb and allows him to absorb magic energy from certain spells and store it for his own use. Motoyasu can absorb the energy of his opponents’ spells and use it to perform a variety fire magics.

Motoyasu is capable of performing a wide range of fire-based feats, including mirage spells that hide its caster in flame and powerful tornadoes. These useful skills often fall behind his high-level spear skills. One would expect nothing less from the legendary Spear Hero.

Motoyasu Kitamura/Relationships

Legendary Heroes

Naofumi Iwatani

Motoyasu’s initial relationship with Naofumi was viewed as mere hostility, which would be an understatement. Motoyasu calls Naofumi “useless” because of his Shield in one of their first conversations. Motoyasu was the first person Malty went to when she made her false accusation of Naofumi of rape. He immediately believed her lies, making his opinion about Naofumi even worse.

They have a pattern in their interactions where Motoyasu shouts at Naofumi about any ‘crime’ committed and they exchange insults. Most of the time, he is kicked out by Filo. Naofumi’s contempt for the Spear Hero is so extreme that he has given Filo the standing order of kicking him away (mostly on the crotch).

Motoyasu’s awakening to the Lust Series and Legendary Spear has changed his view of Naofumi. He now views Filo as his father-in-law, having raised Filo “like his daughter.” Therefore, he takes as gospel or an irrevocable law all that Naofumi tells, and will blindly follow the Shield Hero even though he disagrees or dislikes it.

Naofumi sees the Motoyasu as a “useful idiot” that can be easily exploited and discarded or worse, as an annoying nuisance to be pushed or tricked to go as far as possible.

Ren Amaki

Although they seem to get along, Ren and Motoyasu are more interested in competing against the Bosses of the Waves than they are working together. They also have a tendency to get irritated at each other when their information is not in line. Motoyasu didn’t hate Ren enough before his curse. He would allow Malty to have her way when he discovered her true nature.

The Reprise of the Spear Hero. When Motoyasu realized that he had the spear that would take him back to the summoning ceremony each time one of the heroes died, he didn’t hesitate to kill Ren in order to prove his theory. Motoyasu gradually changes his opinion about Ren through the loops. He first notices that he is concerned for the country, especially regarding Itsuki’s actions. Later, he leaves the throne area in disgust when he realizes that Naofumi was being tried for the Kangaroo court.

Itsuki Kawasumi

Itsuki and Motoyasu don’t interact very often. It’s more of a competition between Ren and them to beat the boss than actually working together.

The Reprise of the Spear Hero. When Post curse Motoyasu had to confirm that any hero would trigger the loop, he immediately killed Ren and Itsuki. After he takes on the same role as before he lost his mind as Malty’s chief heroic pawn and then continues on with that blatant manipulation until it’s natural end in launching an invasion of Siltvelt to kill Naofumi, Motoyasu and Motoyasu.

Vassal Weapon Holders

Raphtalia

Motoyasu believed Naofumi was making Raphtalia his sex slave. He tried to “save her” in a rigged Sacred Duel, but Raphtalia shocked him and slapped his actions. He claimed that no one should be forced into combat (which was a big hypocrisy considering King Aultcray and Motoyasu had coerced Naofumi to the duel just moments before), but she still chose to follow Naofumi. He was criticized by the other Heroes for not only his unjustified duel, but also the way he insists on seeing Raphtalia’s relationship to the Shield Hero.

He tried to defend himself again by claiming Raphtalia had been brainwashed. To which no one was able to agree. After Naofumi was charged with “having a brainwashing defense,” he tried to defend himself by claiming that Raphtalia had been brainwashed. He also received evidence to support his claims.

Naofumi was able to release Raphtalia after his name was cleared. He even acknowledged Raphtalia’s genuine feelings for him as he questioned Naofumi about Raphtalia’s progress in Cal Mira Island’s bathhouse, only to be angry at Naofumi’s insensitivity to her feelings. After the Curse Series was activated, he saw Raphtalia only as a pig. However, this changed later when Naofumi introduced her as Filo’s big sister.

Rishia Ivyred

Motoyasu ranks Rishia fourth in his “cute girl ranking”, after Malty and Raphtalia. Motoyasu has never shown Rishia a willingness to flirt with her, but this is not out of respect, but fear. Motoyasu met Rishia after she was kicked out Itsuki’s party. He felt empathy for Rishia, but it was also a dance he had performed before.

Motoyasu had already offered emotional support to Rishia in similar circumstances back in his world and was eventually stabbed to death for his reward. His response to Rishia’s story of her departure from Itsuki’s group was to contact Naofumi as soon as possible. Motoyasu sees Risha in the same way that he views any other non-Filolial women: as a green-haired, pig-headed pig.

Aultcray Melromarc, XXXII

Motoyasu was the Hero whose daughter was part of the party and received favorable treatment from King. It is said that the King gave Motoyasu requests and that when it came to paying the Heroes, Motoyasu received slightly more than Itsuki or Ren. It is also possible that Aultcray had rare materials in stock for Motoyasu’s weapon reinforcement process.

Post-Curse Series Motoyasu is an entirely different story. He now hates the King for his treatment Naofumi, and refers only to him as “Trash”, the new name Naofumi chose as his punishment.

Malty Melromarc (former).

Motoyasu believed in Malty and always stood by her. Malty was jealous of anyone who came close to Motoyasu and kicked some members out of the party without his knowledge. His good looks were the only thing that she liked about Motoyasu. He believed everything she said without hesitation. Motoyasu didn’t notice any suspicious behavior. He was the only one to refuse to believe Malty was a criminal, despite all the evidence. She had been question about her crimes under the influence of slave seals and was forced to tell the truth.

Motoyasu believed that they had a first-time physical relationship. Malty and her friend sex only to their own pleasure. She completely abandoned him after the Spirit Tortoise incident. He continued to search for his “comrades” despite this only to be surprised by Malty’s real personalities.

Motoyasu’s current opinion on Malty can be best summarized by his nickname for her, the “Red Swine,” which he even refers back to in his childhood memories of her before he lost his sanity.

Lesty (former).

Malty’s close friend Lesty was there for Motoyasu the longest. This was likely due to his naivety, gullibility and friendship. Lesty was a happy member of his party and only needed to encourage the Spear Hero every now and again. Lesty decided to leave Motoyasu as he was a danger to Motoyasu during the Spirit Tortoise disaster.

Elena Haven (former).

She loved Motoyasu more than any of the other members. He was interested in other women, but she didn’t mind. She believed it was normal for men to enjoy pleasure. To secure her place at his party, she went with Malty. She couldn’t take his rashness and irrational behavior. He used her and other women to be a status symbol. After seeing that he couldn’t do anything against Spirit Tortoise, she decided enough was enough and left his party. She sold Motoyasu to save her from being sentenced to death by the crown.

Rino (former)

Motoyasu tried to seduce her into joining his party. Rino was shocked by the party’s fighting style, where the women cheered and Motoyasu was fighting. Malty and other female companions took her, and sold her as an slave. They told Rino that she had left the party because she couldn’t keep with them. Motoyasu met her once after she became a slave, but he was unable to hear her pleas for help and refused to believe she was there. Later, Rino joined a spy unit of the queen to seek revenge on Motoyasu as well as her ex-party members.

Crimmy, Marine and Green

Motoyasu first raised these Filolials to help Filo get over his rejection. They are loyal to him but jealous of Filo’s obsession. To get Filo’s attention, they try to compete against Filo. They were raised by a legendary hero and became filolial queens/kings.

Filolial Followers

Filolials are a veritable hoard that Motoyasu raised to fill the empty space left by Filo’s rejection. Motoyasu is a deranged man who thinks these birds are his children. He would never even consider putting his hands on them. This is bad news for everyone because these birds, like Filo and Naofumi, have a lot of affection for Motoyasu. They also hate Filo for keeping their master’s affections.

Acquiescence

Filo

Filo hated Motoyasu since the first time they met. This was mostly because Filo called Filo “fat” during the Riyute Dragon race. He also considered Filolial to be no match for his race dragon. She immediately sent Filo flying through the air. Naofumi Iwatani gave her the order to send Motoyasu flying every time they met. Motoyasu first saw her human form. He immediately fell in love with her because of his obsession for angels. Unfortunately, he then insulted her monster form again, calling it “fat bird” and was given a second kick to the crotch, sending him flying. Filo referred to Motoyasu behind his back as the “annoying Spear Guy” during the battle between the four Cardinal Heroes and the Church of the Three Heroes treacherous Pope.

Motoyasu was devastated after he was betrayed and fell prey to the Spear’s curse. Filo, seeing his broken spirit, tried to cheer him up, but ended up becoming his goal of affection to her dismay. Filo was left with a new trauma when he refused to let go. Filo was used by Naofumi to manipulate Motoyasu so that he would fight the Waves together.

Etymology

Motoyasu is a Japanese name that means “beginning, previous time, origin” (Yuan) ( Moto) or “ease, peace” (Kang) ( Yasu). Motoyasu’s surname Kitamura is “north”(Bei) ( kita), and “town, Village” (Cun) ( Mura).

Trivia

Motoyasu is a term that describes this world as being similar to the Emerald Online game. Everyone saw that Motoyasu was trying make a harem where he would pick up girls wherever he went. Motoyasu fights in frontlines, while his friends cheer him on. They rarely help him with magic or anything else in battle. Motoyasu is the party’s most sloppy member. He doesn’t care about the men and pays special attention to the women. It is probable that the male party members are dissatisfied by his flirting behavior before leaving, while Malty S Melromarc kicks out the females.
