Luther, the Academy’s only member who didn’t leave, continued to faithfully serve Sir Reginald even though he fell into a depression alone. Luther is seriously injured while on a mission to stop a biochemical menace. Sir Reginald must use a serum in order to save his life. Luther is given an ape-like physiology by the serum, which greatly increases his strength and muscle mass. Sir Reginald sends Luther to the moon to watch for extraterrestrial threats. Luther lives alone on the moon base for four year and then reports back to his father.

Luther is summoned back down to Earth after Sir Reginald’s passing and begins to believe that their father had been murdered. Luther discovers that Sir Reginald never received any reports that he had sent back. He believes that he is a failure, and is sent away because he wasn’t a good enough Number 1. This causes a huge impact on his self-confidence.

Luther, who was caught up in Five’s failed attempt to dodge Viktor’s apocalypse escape, finds himself in Dallas in 1962. He works as a driver at a burlesque bar and sometimes uses his super strength in order to win rigged bouts in underground boxing rings.

Personality Luther Hargreeves

Luther is a caring, protective, and righteous person. He can be seen to instantly put himself in danger and act as a shield when necessary. He was the only sibling to remain at the academy, where he continued his superhero work and trusted his father implicitly. Luther is clearly shown to be the leader of Umbrella Academy, and his father’s “Number One”, and to take his role seriously. He dedicates his life to the cause of his father. He never left the Umbrella Academy and never lived outside it.

He became isolated and sheltered. His dedication to the Umbrella Academy was a major reason he never had friends. He is naive and almost childlike as a result. He is distraught and lost when he learns that his father never read the reports from the moon. This causes him to spiral out-of-control and go to a rave, get drunk, and take drugs.

Appearance Luther Hargreeves

He was 6’5″ [citation required] with a slim, but muscular frame before the experimental serum was administered. He’s now much larger and bulkier than before the serum. His upper body is hulking and his skin is leathery-hairy. To hide his human-like appearance, he wears high-necked shirts with fingerless gloves and a wide-brimmed shirt.

Reginald’s secret

Reginald sent Luther to the moon after Luther’s accidental monstrous transformation. He spent four years alone on the Moon, suffering from loneliness, depression, and social isolation.

After his father’s passing, Luther was shocked to discover that Reginald was not following all the reports Luther had sent to Earth. This was a devastating blow to his self-esteem, which was once high as a superhero and former leader.

Relationship with Allison

Luther and Allison were best friends from childhood and have been close ever since. Viktor’s memoir describes them as children who disappeared into their private worlds and communicated in their own secret language. It is obvious that they have a connection; neither one of them can deny it. The Academy knows it too, but the pair never took any action.

Before kissing, Luther and Allison dance.

Their reunion is a way for them to be closer after their father’s passing. Allison comforts Luther when he is distraught about his discovery regarding his father and the futility of his mission. They dance together and share a kiss in the middle of their moment. The two dance and, in the midst of it all, share a kiss.

This timeline has been redrawn, but Klaus discovers Luther in his hour of need, instead of Allison. So, they never experience this moment, and Luther’s descent into chaos begins.

The first apocalypse

The Academy learns that Viktor is responsible for the impending apocalypse. Number Five once jumped back into the future to stop it. Luther kills Viktor in an attempt to prevent that catastrophe. The Academy then attempts to decide what to do.

Unbeknownst Luther, Viktor is attracted to the isolation chamber. They transform into the White Violin and destroy the Hargreeves house, killing Pogo and Grace, before escaping. Luther, by not trusting them, inadvertently creates the exact apocalypse that they were trying stop. The Academy can barely escape the apocalypse by jumping through time using Five’s powers which leaves them in the 1960s.

Trivia

Many fans may agree with Luther’s appearance and powers. Both are leaders, just like Captain America. They were both exposed to serums that made their lives better. Luther made some horrible mistakes in trying to be a leader. Steve became a handsome young man and a supersoldier. Luther, on the other hand, transformed himself from a pretty superhero into a monstrous apeman. They are both physically strong, much like Superman. Both were ideal leaders at the beginning, but they didn’t want to lose that position after all these years.
