Alphonse Elric is a character in the manga and anime series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. He is a young man who has been through a lot in his life, including being turned into a vampire by Jotaro Kujo. Elric is known for his strong will and determination, as well as his quick wit and sharp tongue. He is also known for being an expert swordsman and martial artist. Despite all of this, Elric has a deep sense of self-doubt and insecurity. This is due to his experiences in life - including being turned into a vampire - and the fact that he doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere. Despite this, Elric remains determined to make things right for himself and those around him. He is always looking out for those he cares about, even if it means putting himself through difficult times.

Appearance Alphonse Elric

Alphonse, with his gunmetal-colored steel armor, stands out as the tallest character in the series. He can outdo such man-mountains like Captain Buccaneer or Major Armstrong, while dwarfing his older brother who barely reaches his elbow at the start of the series. A running joke in the series is Alphonse being mistaken for the “Fullmetal Alchemist” because of his fully armored steel body.

He can also be mistaken for Ed’s older brother, or his father at times. Al’s helmet is decorated with a conical horn at the center of his forehead. It also has two parallel horizontal vents under each half-moon eyes hole. A fang motif is located just above his protruding jaw. The helmet’s top also has a ribbon of white hair that reaches the bottom of the suit’s rear. Al is not happy about the decision to cut the hair during a skirmish against the Fort Briggs Mountain Patrol.

The trunk of your body includes a removable breastplate, which is located just below the throat guard. It also has a triangular shelf that protrudes from the chest. A high collar extends out of your back and surrounds the sides and rear of your neck. There’s also a large circular leather patch on each side.

The groin is covered by a breechcloth. On the left shoulder is a red Flam that signifies Alphonse’s training under the master Alchemist, Izumi Cutis.

Al’s armor has a triple spike motif. Each shoulder is covered with three large conical spikes in a row. Every elbow, knee and foot also have small, spiky protrusions. Al appears to also have a white band around the right leg that holds a small weapon holster.

The armor’s empty shell contains a curtain made of chain mail to protect its former owner. Also inside is an alchemical rune that Edward has drawn in his blood. This runse binds Al’s spirit to the metal through the iron in both. Al’s “Blood Seal”, which is likely Edward’s design, denotes a small flame that has been locked in place by multiple intersecting Polygons.

Human Form

Alphonse’s human body prior to the failed transmutation.

The manga shows thatAlphonse looked a lot like his brother before the accident. Al, despite being one year older than Edward, wore his golden-blond short hair neatly styled with a parted on the left. His eyes, which are gold like Ed’s, are more round than Ed’s. They also have a wider face. This makes Al look more like Trisha than Ed who looks more like Van Hohenheim.

In Chapter53 it is revealed that Al’s soul still exists inside the Gate. It has lost its skeletal structure and is now unable to receive any nourishment or care. His finger and toenails have grown past his digits, and the hair of Al, although still parted on the left side, grows past its shoulders and down to the collarbone. It was alive in the physical realm but had developed and aged as it would in the real world. After regaining his human body, he’s healthy and well-nourished by the end.

Al’s appearance in the 2003 anime series is slightly different. Although his hair is darker than Edward’s and his eyes are more brown than gold, there aren’t many differences in the anime and manga. In Conqueror Of Shamballa, Al is wearing a similar hairstyle as his older brother. His bangs are long but not in the middle and his hair is pulled back. The movie’s outfit is very similar to Ed’s. It includes a pair white gloves with Transmutation circles. Al’s jacket is not as fastened at the top like Ed’s black jacket. Instead, it has a row of four buttons. Al doesn’t wear elevator boots. This is likely because he doesn’t share his brother’s height.

Personality Alphonse Elric

Alphonse’s passive and calm disposition is a counter to his more aggressive personality. Alphonse is kind-hearted, compassionate, and patient almost to the point that he acts out of a protective selflessness for his family, friends, and sometimes even his enemies (Scar being a prime example).

Alphonse, who lost his physical body at the age 10 and had to slow down his psychological growth, has a childlike purity that he still displays in the face all the horrors. However, despite his years, he has always been more mature than Edward. Al is just as passionate as Edward, but he jokes that Edward’s outbursts make it harder for him to be as passionate.

Al does have some dark places in his heart, however, due to the many tragedies in his life. Al is plagued by insecurities regarding his uncertain existence in a suit of armour. He longs for the warmth and closeness of his past life, but is afraid that he will never experience it again. Alphonse also carries the additional burden of blaming his mother for his failure to raise his brother and for his subsequent loss of limbs.

Alphonse, who detests Edward’s diminutive stature, dislikes being reminded about his large size. He often feels melancholy about it, and laments that it wasn’t his decision to grow so large. He takes great pleasure in being treated as a child by others, rather than the brutish and hulking adult he is.

Alphonse has a strong affection for kittens. This may be due to his need for warmth and love.

Alphonse seems to also have a deep love for women. Alphonse is a sensitive individual with a gift for inspiring and complimentary speech. Although this doesn’t negate the impact his armor body has had on ordinary girls, it does allow Alphonse to make an impression on the few women he associates with, such as Mei Chang and Riza Hawkeye. Alphonse often pairs up with female comrades when Edward isn’t available. Al’s motivation to find a girlfriend is Arakawa in many of the omake.

Alphonse is missing the intimacy of human contact and delicious food. Edward encouraged him to keep a record of the foods he’ll eat when he returns to his body to keep him sane. He also stated that Winry’s apple pie is his favorite food.

Al believes that using a Philosopher’s Stone is the equivalent of murder but also recognizes the importance of the wills and intentions of its component souls. This was what enabled him to use the stone’s power against Pride and Kimblee.

Relationships Alphonse Elric

Edward Elric

Alphonse’s bond with his older brother is undoubtedly the most important and strong of all his personal relationships. Although the Elric brothers are very different people and have their own opinions, they are close enough to each other that they would willingly and voluntarily give up their lives for the other.

Alphonse is very supportive of Edward and has a lot of faith in him, despite the fact Edward almost always requires Al to take care of him and keep him out of trouble. Winry describes Alphonse as almost parental in his care for Edward, who is very protective of him. Ed continues to work feverishly to find a way to restore his brother to his normal state, but Al insists that he wants his body back if Edward can do the same for his right arm and leg.

Scar

Alphonse and Scar are very similar. Both suffered from deep traumas and had to have a brother give his arm to save them. Alphonse has Ed, but Scar lost his brother. This is one of the major differences. Scar dedicated his life to revenge and Alphonse was unable to bear the consequences. They end up bonding with another Shadow Archetype, which is unusual for them. Scar sacrifices his arm again to save Alphonse.

Winry Rockbell

Winry was born into the loving family who lived next to the Elrics. She grew up with Ed and Al, and is as dear to them as a sister. Al and Winry are more than childhood best friends; they are a family. Alphonse did have romantic feelings for Winry as a child, as he mentioned how Ed and he had fought over Winry’s hand in marriage but were both rejected.

Al still expresses jealousy over Edward’s near naked sighting of her in Chapter 85. Al seems to have forgotten about his feelings and enjoys teasing Winry over her apparent feelings towards his brother.

Izumi Curtis

Alphonse, a former student and mentor in alchemy, has a deep respect for Izumi’s vast knowledge. He also remembers his harsh spiritual and physical training as a child. This makes it clear that she is the only person the brave young man is afraid of. However, Edward and Alphonse have a deep respect for Izumi’s hard work in raising them to become alchemists and wise young men.

They see her (in her gentler moments), as a surrogate mother and her sons as surrogate children. The boys’ shame at disobeying her teachings causes tension in their relationship. However, Alphonse, Izumi and the boys can come to terms with their mistakes and become friends.

Mei Chang

Alphonse and Mei have a one-sided relationship throughout the series. Mei lavishes praises on him and does not seem to view her as anything more than a friend or ally. His chivalrous and protective nature means that he is able to protect her during their battles together. Al’s description of his body, in contrast to his older brother’s, is what initially attracted her to him.

Al’s initial interest in her seems to be intellectual. He hopes to learn alkahestry. Their adventures in the North seemed to have led to a closer relationship as they both recognized the other as an intellectual equal. Alphonse travels to Xing under Mei’s tutelage to learn alkahestry and then returns to Amestris later. She is seen in an Elric family photo alongside Al many years later. This suggests that she and Alphonse have grown closer over the years.

Van Hohenheim

Al, unlike Ed, doesn’t call Hohenheim a dad, even though he left the family as a child. Al was with Winry when Al met his father in Reole. Al learns about Hohenheim’s past with Father, and the destruction of Xerxes that turned Hohenheim into a Philosopher’s Stone. Al also understands how Hohenheim considered himself a monster after he lost Trisha and survived it because he was immortal.

Pinako Rockbell

Pinako, Winry’s grandmother, was the one who looked after her brothers when their mother died. Al and Ed refer to her as Granny. She is also a friend of Hohenheim and seems to care a lot for Ed, Al, and Winry. Hohenheim warned her about the dangers of staying at Amestris (Manga, 2009 anime), and she suggested she leave. But she decided to stay, as she had people who were dependent on her, Winry, Ed and Al.

Abilities

Alphonse was trained by the master alchemist Izumi Kurtis. He has also been instructed to condition his body through regular training and sparring. This is part of her philosophy “to train your spirit, first train your body.” Al is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter who can take on armed opponents as well as martial arts experts. Edward stated that Alphonse was a more skilled fighter than he is and that he has never defeated him in a fight since Izumi’s training.

His armor body offers several combat advantages, including enhanced offense and defense, impermeability to bullets and inexhaustible stamina. He is also immune to extreme temperatures and can breathe, eat, and sleep without restriction. These are however limited by the fact that his armor cannot be damaged by the Blood Seal within it. This prevents his soul from being detached.

Alphonse, like his brother, has a brilliant intellect and prodigious proficiency when it comes to the study of biology, chemistry and alchemy. Alphonse is the more intelligent of the two and has been able match his brother’s alchemy skills since they were children. Alphonse is skilled in words and can solve complex alchemical mysteries and puzzles. However, Edward seems to have an amazing sense of focus. Instead, he is developing social skills that his older brother is severely lacking.

Alphonse, in the 2003 anime serie would have been a State Alchemist with his brother. However, he was forced to withdraw from the program due to the physical evaluation. It is revealed that Alphonse was able to pass the written part of the certification exam. This feat was not possible for Edward.

Alchemy

Alphonse performs alchemy after drawing the circle.

Alphonse, a highly skilled alchemist, can transmute quickly and cleanly, while maintaining the same level of detail as his master, Izumi. Alchemy is used to enhance his offensive and defensive abilities. He creates melee strike weapons and alters his environment to gain an advantage. His brother Edward also uses it to transmute columns, batteringrams and traps for his foes.

Although his alchemy tends to be more traditional than Edward’s (who uses it in unconventional ways to outsmart his enemies), he is more creative when necessary. He was able, for example, to transmute flash bangs and flexible swords with his alchemy, as well as surprise his enemies by using a Philosopher’s Stone.

Alphonse’s alchemy is different in many ways, which are made clear over the course the two divergent storylines. It becomes evident that Alphonse does not need to physically touch the transmutation ranges that he draws to manipulate matter. He can simply stand over a circle with his concentration and apply concentration (sometimes shown as his crossing both hands flat over the circle with both palms facing downward), which allows him to manipulate matter without having to touch it.

This feat is unmatched by any human alchemist who doesn’t have an alchemical amplifier. Because he is a soul in an armor suit, his ability to project the influence of his soul to larger distances may explain why.

Alphonse has the ability to transmute in the manga and the 2009 anime. The Gate was the result of the failed Human Transmutation. However, this ability had been hidden in his soul for so long that his more painful memories of the event were suppressed. Alphonse regains his memories and uses Chapter33 to put the skills he saw his master and brother perform.

Alphonse, in the 2003 anime is able to transmute without the use of a circle. This happens by him becoming the Philosopher’s Stone through Scar’s manipulations. This seems like a good thing. His armor’s properties are altered and his blood seal is impervious to damage. However, it soon becomes obvious that Alphonse, the stone, reacts dangerously to nearby transmutations. He also loses a part of his physical body when he is used as an alchemical amplifier.

Alphonse’s alchemy undergoes yet another transformation in Conquerors of Shamballa. He is now unable to transmute without using circles so he uses alchemy quickly with a pair white gloves that have transmutation circles. Alphonse also has the ability to use his soul to create golems from inanimate objects due to the instability of the soul he acquired after his body was changed many times. He can communicate with his avatars and see through their eyes while in this state.

Trivia

Al, the character, bears some resemblance with Agilulf (the protagonist of Italo Calio’s Nonexistent Knight ). Agilulf, like Al, is nothing more than a living suit o’ armor. He is a formidable fighter and has a good sense of manners. In a recent fan poll, Al was named the fourth most beloved character in the series. Al’s breechcloth is white in the manga, 2009 anime, and light violet in the 2003 anime. Lucky Star 12: A cosplayer portrays Alphonse in full armour at Comiket. However, the suit of armor has a yellowish tint. An element called “Metal Golem” can be found in the app “Alchemy”. The Metal Golem is a bit like Alphonse. Al makes a cameo in Hayate The Combat Butler. Al makes an appearance in Episode 5 (Anime Series). Hayate, the Combat Butler When he is referred to by Nagi Sanzenin who has the same Japanese voice actress. The rectangular plate beneath Alphonse’s helmet’s chin has five openings in the 2003 anime and manga. It has four in the 2009 anime. Rare animation errors where it uses three to five openings are not included. Arakawa didn’t draw Alphonse the armor face in his original form. He did so to display emotions regardless of circumstances or emotional climate. He began making faces during comedy scenes in Chapter 4: Battle on the Train. This gag was used by both animes as early as the first episodes. Al is 5’10 (177. 8cm), and Ed 5’9 (175. 26cm).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood / Manga

Alphonse is a direct descendant from Van Hohenheim in the manga and the 2009 anime. King Bradley, a human-based Homunculus who shares close blood kinship to Al, can be an exception to this rule. Arakawa also joked that Alphonse (alongside Ed) is technically an uncle to the seven Homunculi because he refers to them by blood. Al is one of only two characters in the series who knows Winry and Ed have romantic feelings. The other being Riza Hawkeye. A manga extra shows that Al allows only women and cats to his armor. However, the 2003 Anime depicts him carrying Black Hayate (a canine) within him. Chapter 56 also shows him carrying Xiao–Mei (a panda), although he considers Xiao–Mei to have been a cat. Two theme songs by Alphonse are featured on the Brotherhood anime album. The first is “Kaze ni Dakarete” performed by his seiyu Rie Kugimiya. The second is “Restore Steppin’” performed by Edward’s seiyu Romi Park. Al and Edward are the only characters to meet all eight homunculi at minimum once.

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 anime)

His 2003 VA Aaron Dismuke, who voiced Arslan with Edward’s voice actor Vic Mignogna as Himles, was recorded. They would also play brothers in Funimation’s redubbing of The Vision of Escaflowne.

Fullmetal Alchemist – 5 Ways Alphonse Elric Has Changed (and 5 He remained The Same)

The story of Fullmetal Alchemist is a dynamic one. Yesterday’s enemies become today’s friends, and vice versa. While Edward may be bitter about their past mistakes, Alphonse doesn’t.

Alphonse, the younger brother is more patient and kind than Edward. However, he’s less intelligent and clever and doesn’t hold state alchemist status. Alphonse has seen many changes throughout the series. However, in some ways, he has kept true to himself. Like all of the others, he is a constantly changing character.

10 CHANGED – His Feelings towards Winry Rockbell

Al and Ed were boys when they played with Winry Rockbell . The brothers would argue over who would marry the girl next to them and then compete for the title of “Winry”. The brothers were at times neck and neck. However, Winry appeared to favor Al.

Edward, however, has since admitted his true feelings towards Winry and vice versa. Al was then the third wheel. Al did not mind; he and Winry were now only friends and, without doubt, Al is happy for his brother-in-law and neighbor.

9 SAME: His Kind Spirit

Alphonse is a person-person. He was kind and caring almost to the point of being a bad influence on Edward. Al was a mediator between Ed, and Ed, and this helped the Elric on their adventure. Edward can be confrontational and cunning.

Al was always polite and polite. Even with his armored body, Al doesn’t intimidate or browbeat others, even though that would be easy for him. He might occasionally do this, but overall he fits the “gentle giant” mold well.

8 CHANGED – His Opinion on Human Transmutation

Alphonse and Edward both underwent this personal change. When their mother Trisha died, the brothers were devastated and Van Hohenheim was not able to help. Al and his brother saw human transmutation as a kind of miracle.

Alphonse quickly changed his tune after Ed and Al performed the ritual. Truth’s eye appeared and robbed Alphonse his entire body. Al now knows the truth and recognizes human transmutation as the forbidden secret it is.

7 SAME: His love of Winry’s cooking

Winry is most well-known for her expertise with automail and her passion for designing and repairing automail parts. She is also an excellent cook and has spent many hours perfecting her recipes. Apple pie is her favorite.

Alphonse was a fan of Winry’s food before he became a suit-of-armour. He has been daydreaming about the day when his body will be able to support another Rockbell meal. Sometimes it’s the little things in life that really matter.

6 CHANGED : His Relationship to Hohenheim

Edward was unhappy with his father Hohenheim and furious that Hohenheim hadn’t been there when Trisha died. Alphonse was more open-minded about this and tried to avoid thinking too much about his father during the years that followed his attempt at human transmutation.

Alphonse would eventually meet his father face-to-face, which was better than Ed’s and Hohenheims reunion. Alphonse, Hohenheim listened carefully to each other and valued their positions. Al eventually came to have a more sympathetic view of his father.

5 SAME: His love of science

Alphonse and Edward were long-standing supporters of the scientific method . This is unlikely to change anytime soon. The brothers spent their idle time in rural Resembool doing endless scientific experiments, research, and study, even when they were still young.

Alphonse assisted Ed in decoding Tim Marcoh’s highly encrypted research notes on Philosopher’s Stone. This was during Fullmetal Alchemist’s main events. Ed could not have done that without a scientist mind like his.

4 CHANGED : His Need for Transmutation Circles

Transmutation circles are necessary for alchemy to be properly channeled. Even the most powerful people, such as Colonel Roy Mustang or Major Alex Louis Armstrong, need them. At first, Alphonse also needed them. One was drawn by him when he tried to escape Greed’s clutches using alchemy.

Alphonse woke up to his hidden memories mid-series and realized that he knew how to do this art without using circles because he had seen the Truth. Al was able to use alchemy without the need for transmutation circles from that moment on.

3 SAME: His fondness for cats

Alphonse is a gentle person. His warm fuzzy feelings for animals and people around him have been a hallmark of his personality. Alphonse, unlike Edward, has a deep love for cats and stray pets. He will always take care of a cat in distress.

Al has stopped in his tracks more than once to adopt a stray cat. This was much to Ed’s dismay. Al usually has to surrender the cats within a few days, but his affection for these felines is the same.

2 CHANGED : His Access to State Resources

Resembool, a rural town in the shepherd district of Resembool, is boring for science-oriented children like the Elric brothers. The town even doesn’t have a library. Edward was 12 years old when he became a state alchemist. He gained security clearance, cash, and access to books, laboratories, and even books.

Alphonse shares these state-granted privileges often with his brother. Alphonse has made good of this fact ever since. Ed helped him to get rare research books back at Resembool. However, he is now able to check out any book or notebook he wants.

1 SAME: His Respect For Izumi Curtis

Before they attempted human transmutation, Ed and Al were students of Izumi Curtis, a butcher/housewife/alchemist. She is a tough woman, but she is also very knowledgeable in alchemy and the great cycle that govern the flow of the universe.

Alphonse was a great admirer of Izumi and used to fear her when she was angry. Al is not her student anymore, but he still admires her and is awed by her abilities. He still considers her a “sensei”, or teacher.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood – 10 Best Alphonse Elric Quotes

Alphonse Elric can be hard to miss. He is a talking, walking suit of armor with his soul sealed in place by a blood sealing. He is on a mission to retrieve his body after an unsuccessful attempt at human transmutation. His older brother Edward is always there to support him as they forge ahead, determined to bring each other back to normal.

Al, despite his physical appearance, is often overlooked by his brother, who is louder and more impulsive. Al is a great speaker when he speaks, and he has always something to say. Edward is just as influential when it comes to Edward’s Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood quotes.

10His Brother’s Keeper

“I Will Not Allow You to Abandon the Possibility of Hope and Choose A Meaningless Death!”

Al’s armor and Ed’s automail are in disarray after a fight with Scarin East City. Al is furious at Ed for letting Scar kill him rather than trying to flee and live.

Al calls Edward in an uncharacteristic moment of anger for his refusal to accept Nina’s murder under the pretense that he would save him. He insists that only he can save himself is to live and find a way to return their bodies to health. This powerful statement demonstrates how Al cares about his brother.

9 Words of Encouragement

“The kind of dedication you show to reading is a talent all on its own.”

Sheska saves Ed and Al from the flames at Central Library’s First Branch by trancribing a copy Dr. Marcoh’s research notes from memory. Sheska, however, doesn’t realise how important her role is and refers to herself as “pathetic mess”.

Alphonse doesn’t agree with Sheska’s view on herself. His words to boost her self-esteem and encourage her to be more confident are great advice. People have many talents and passions that can all be used. Col. Hughes hired her because of her love for reading and photographic memory. This could save many important military records. Al was the first to see her worth.

8 Self Conscious Teenager

“It’s not like I asked to get this big!”

Al and Ed sneak into the Fifth Laboratory in an attempt to find out more about the military’s involvement with the creation of the Philosopher’s Stones. Al escapes through an open air vent, but Ed climbs through it.

Al said this to Ed in response to Ed’s comment about his size. It’s sweet and sad. It serves as a reminder of Alphonse underneath his armor. He is a 14-year-old self-conscious teenager who has suffered a lot from trauma. This is also hilarious when compared to Edward who obsesses about how small he really is and attacks anyone who calls Edward short.

7 Full of Wonder

“Everyone is Blessed when a Baby Is Born.”

Al and Ed witness the birth of a baby at Rush Valley. They then tell Izumi Curtis their alchemy teacher about it. Alphonse, inspired by the courage of her mother and the support she received, makes this happy declaration.

Because Alphonse is encased in a hard, cold suit of armor, this quote is very poignant. Alphonse is unable to eat or sleep and has to overcome his fear of not being human. He considers it a blessing to see a baby born. It’s a reminder of his origins and that he is still human.

6 Taking No Prisoners

“So, I thought it over for myself and decided that I should just make you tell me what I want to know.”

Alphonse is seen sweeping past the Curtis’ butcher shop as Greed’s gang flies by, trying to persuade him to join them. Al declares that his teacher told him not to go with strangers. The chimeras then tell Al that he is old enough to think for themselves.

Sassy Al is rarely seen, but he’s a deadly presence when he does. Alphonse kicks Dolcetto in his face as a sarcastic reply. This shows that he is not only polite but also intelligent and will not be fooled. This video shows his humor and confidence in his abilities. It also reveals the depth of his character s.

5 Guardian Armor

“I Will Not Let Anybody Else Get Killed. Not When I Can Protect Them!”

Lust convinces Lieutenant Hawkeye Colonel Mustang is dead. She’s ready for death and surrender. Alphonse will not allow that to happen. Alphonse protects Lust until Mustang arrives.

Alphonse’s armor is very sturdy. As long as his blood seal remains intact, he will not die even if his armor falls apart. He’s not invincible, however. Al was shocked to see the normally stoic Hawkeye choose death. This quote is a great example of his courage and willingness to risk everything for the sake of a friend.

4 Stealing Hearts

“I’m A Gentleman.”

Mei suggests to Alphonse that he in human form should look exactly like Edward. Al indignantly lists all the differences between him and Edward, from their physical features, to Al’s polite, considerate nature.

Mei has a crush upon Alphonse in this hilariously outrageous moment. Ironically, Al tells Mei that he doesn’t have a temper, while also flaring up at Mei, suggesting that he’s like Ed, is hilarious. It shows that, while he is more mature than his brother, he still needs to mature. Mei is completely in love with Al and there are first signs of romance between them.

3 For the Voiceless

“We’ll Fight, Together.”

Al is wounded when Heinkel tells Al that he had a Philosopher’s Stone taken unknowingly from Kimblee at Baschool. Alphonse is urged by Heinkel to use the stone against Pride and Kimblee. He states that the inside souls would love to fight, even though their bodies are gone.

Edward and Alphonse are against the use of the Philosopher’s Stone because it is made from human sacrifice. Al is able to see the stone through Heinkel’s eyes thanks to his words. Although the people inside it are bound, they still have their individual wills and Al is giving them a voice by using it. Al knows that by accepting the stone, he is empowering the people within it. They are all fighting together.

2 No Greater Love

“Keep Moving Brother!”

Father is weak and searching for souls to eat, and Edward is right there, with his automail arm destroyed, and his other arm held in position by a piece rebar. Al gives his soul in order to give Ed back his arm, allowing him freedom and to continue fighting.

This line is a representation of everything Al has fought for. Ed always wanted Ed to live, regardless of what happened. His goal was to save Ed’s leg and arm, just as Ed wanted to save Al’s body. Al can achieve all these goals at once. This is not a long goodbye, it’s just the right thing. Al makes it clear in one sentence.

1 Always More to Discover

“If you take 10 and then add something of your own, you get 11.”

Al and Ed have the Promised Day behind their and their bodies (mostly), are now ready for the next adventure. Al explains the new principle of alchemy he has hypothesized with Ed and is ready to prove it while visiting Elicia Hughes and Gracia.

This theory reflects Edward’s alchemy sacrifice to bring Al back. It also reflects the support the Elrics received along their adventure. Alphonse uses this line to let viewers know where the brothers will be next, while also expressing gratitude for all those who helped them get there.
