The Wandering Witch anime is similar to the Kino’s Journey anime in that it uses a similar narrative structure. This story focuses on morality tales about a traveler who visits different fictional countries. Kino’s Journey is known for its dark plot twists, even when the countries appear good.

The Wandering Witch anime may be as close as Kino’s Journey Season 2 from a thematic perspective.

Another commonity is the way that the books were adapted. There are 22 Kino’s Journey light novel titles. The anime studio adapted only the fan-favorite chapters.

Studio C2C seems to have followed a similar approach. However, the director stated in an interview that he enjoys focusing on recurring characters. The chapters were compressed by skipping some details that didn’t impact the overall plot.

Episode 3’s tonal shift was likely painful for anime-only viewers who weren’t ready for the dark themes of the books.

The manga’s graphic portrayal of Nino’s death or the grim description in the light novel books about the funeral of the flower girl were noticeably less graphic than the manga. Nino’s fate was much more clearly stated in the manga/books than it was in anime.

Episode 4 ended with Princess Mirarose going insane. Elaina and the princess have a brief, friendly conversation in the books. Elaina quickly says goodbye to her and she speaks of enjoying her vengeance.

Mirarose was seen holding her father’s head, which she had severed, by her hair in the manga.

One notable standout in terms of pacing is Episode 1. The original book began with Elaina visiting Land of Mages. This was the subject of Episode 2. The backstory of Elaina was told in flashbacks interspersed with the first book. However, the anime organized everything into a linear timeline to make the anime’s opening episode more interesting.

Otherwise, Wandering Witch. The Journey of Elaina episodes were named after the chapters that they adapt. It’s easy to identify which books they came from. Here’s a guide.

The “A Story About All Kinds of Ashen Witches” chapter in Episode 12 is a great way to end the episode from a thematic perspective.

The good news is there are plenty of sources for Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina season 2. Unfortunately, the manga is not as popular as the anime and books.

English-only anime lovers who want to read more (or go further) should start the manga or books from the beginning, since the anime skips so many chapters.

You don’t have to be afraid that the stories are too dark. Most chapters are humorous slice-of-life stories. Nevertheless, most books contain several sad stories with at least one of them being extremely dark. Based on the ending Episode 12, Wandering Witch Season 2 will feature the character Amnesia.
